Benefit for Clinic at a Time with Natty Nation June 6th!!

june-6-poster-50.jpgCome to the Capital Brewery on Sunday, June 6th from 2p-6pm to enjoy great music by Natty Nation, Capital Brewery’s brews, fun kid’s activities and amazing Ethiopian food —all while supporting Clinic at a Time, a wonderful grassroots organization that helps the people of Ethiopia!

“The goal of the organization is to improve the quality of health care for the poor and the underprivileged communities in the Province of Gojjam, located in northwestern Ethiopia.  They do this by collecting and providing medical supplies; helping to improve existing public health care facilities; helping to build new facilities; and providing health care-related information and education to health care workers and the community.Working from her home – with no paid staff and virtually no “overhead” costs – Mulu is able to commit 100 percent of the donations collected for CAAT toward improving health conditions in Gojjam.

Everyone working with CAAT is doing so on a volunteer basis. And because of her lifelong ties to the community, Mulu can work directly with regional government authorities, civic organizations and community volunteers there.”

“CAAT is truly a unique organization. Because of Mulu’s personal connections to people in the region – and because of CAAT’s lack of “bureaucratic red tape” and expenses for office space and employees that that larger organizations must cover – donations to CAAT will have an immediate and direct impact on the health care needs of the region.”

I will post a reminder about this great event and will see you there!!! *If you cannot make it to the event, but want to make a donation, please visit Clinic At a Time. There is such a great need…I have seen it firsthand…

On a side note, Mama Jen is taking a break from MomAppeal for awhile because I find myself wanting the extra family time… I struggled with this decision, but it is the best thing for me right now…The fabulous Mama Kate plans to keep things going and would love to hear from you if you have a fab find or important event that you want people to know about!

Thank you for being wonderful, loyal readers!!!

Coffee Talk event: Get Fit, Mamas!

 header-3.jpg

We know the drill. Have a kid or two, feel lumpy and soft. You want to exercise, but where do you find the time or an affordable class or gym?

A couple of years ago, we both started training with Dustin Maher through his MamaTone group fitness classes for moms. We can’t say enough about the experience—particularly the fact that it’s great to work out with gals of all shapes, sizes, and fitness levels who know what you’re going through. Dustin’s created a fun and supportive community atmosphere in his MamaTone fitness classes at Supreme Health club, and it’s fantastic to have a workout that is geared toward women’s bodies and getting us mommies back in shape fast. We’ve come to believe that we deserve to carve out time for focused exercise, as it makes us feel and look better, and helps us cope with and de-stress from the everyday aspects of momhood. That’s good stuff.

beansprouts_hfht_final.jpgTogether with the gals at Bean Sprouts cafe, we’ve created a monthly mommy chat. It’s an opportunity to gather, grow your community of moms, and talk about topics that are of interest to you. This month’s Coffee Talk, at Bean Sprouts, is loaded with inspiration and tips to make getting into shape easy. Dustin will teach 5 body-transforming
exercises you can easily do at home—whether watching the kids in the yard or Oprah on TV. He’ll also advise on exercises to avoid (yes mamas, it’s crunches!), and share nutrition tips on the top metabolism-boosting foods you can eat. You may have heard of Dustin; his fitness advice has been featured on local news casts for NBC, ABC, and CBS, as well as on Wisconsin Public Radio. He’s also founder of Fit Fun Bootcamps, and has recently launched a series of workout videos.

To learn more about Dustin Maher, his workouts and fitness philosophy, visit dustinmaherfitness.com/about-2/. Be sure to visit his site for more details on attending a MamaTone class free, and receiving a free fitness-related gift from Dustin (sign up for his newsletter). On his site, you’ll also be inspired by some amazing body transformations from some of his clients, and appreciate all the fitness and nutrition advice he offers.

Kids are welcome! They can play while we moms enjoy a complimentary cuppa joe and catch up on getting fit. Stay for lunch afterward, and gnosh on Bean Sprouts delish and healthy eats.

No more excuses — we’ll see you at Coffee Talk!

family.jpg

Kids eat free on Mondays at our favorite little family cafe in Middleton that hides veggies in your kids’ favorite foods—-Bean Sprouts!  When you purchase any adult meal you receive a kid’s meal for free!  Fantastic!!

There are also a number of new winter cooking classes to check out including  Cocoa and Cupcakes class happening on Monday, January 19 (when most schools are out) and a Soup-er Bowl class on January 29 right before the big game weekend!
A new 4-week series of their most popular class - Bitty Bakers starts on January 21.  I can vouch for how amazing this one is…the recipes, how it is geared towards the kids–everything.  I actually make a number of the recipes we learned because they were so amazing!

Warm Your Soul … Madison’s Best Hot Chocolate

db_store.jpgaphrodisiac_her.png

I just returned from the most delicious cups of hot cocoa I think I’ve ever sipped: heavy cream infused with Chocolatier David Bacco’s spicy Madras curry and chocolate blend. Simple, velvety sublimity, with a kick, served on a silver platter.

It’s a perfect stop after a holiday shopping jag at Hilldale Mall, where Bacco’s shop is located (in the pedestrian mall area across the street from Cornblooms and Sundance). I lingered there last night with a friend. She had the spiced cocoa, a blend of chocolate and pasilla, ancho and chipolte peppers. Had to go back today with my son (he made me), for the cocoa naturale. Coming soon, I’m told, is a white hot chocolate concoction. All the cocoas are served with a chocolate stir stick.

Besides the decadent drinks, Bacco also offers a selection of desserts and an incredible chocolates (more on those to come … ), if a cup of the liquid stuff isn’t quite enough. The space is a study in zen, reflecting the exotic influence of the ingredients in many of Bacco’s chocolates.

The staff brought out a chocolate heart, atop a white marble square, for my son, and sent us off with two extras for my daughter, who couldn’t join us. Last night they offered my gal pal and me a complimentary framboise truffle. That’s the kind of sweetness that will bring me back (many times) again.

Fine Election Party Eats … @ Madison’s Fromagination

home_about.jpghome_gifts.jpghome_cheese.jpg

Hey Mamas — this is just in from Fromagination (that classy cheese boutique on Carroll Street downtown on the Square): 20 % off all Wisconsin cheeses today only! Need something to take to an election party tonight? I know this is Wisconsin, but forget the big block of waxy colby and hunk of summer sausage from grocery. Finesse your soiree with some of Fromagination’s fine Wisconsin artisan cheeses — and all the accompanying fixings, from crackers, charcuterie and confit to an edited selection of wines and beers. Cheeses to look for: Little Darling, Pleasant Ridge Reserve, Hook’s Cheddar, Mobay, Dante, Ocooch Mountain, Petit Freres, Widmer’s Aged Brick, Gran Queso, Green Fields, or (two of my personal favorites) Marieke’s Gouda (try the fenugreek) or Fantome Farm’s Chevre. There are many more to try. Heck, if you’re voting opposite of your party attendees, you can even make a big stink with some Limburger.

So, go rock the vote, then watch it all unfold over some great cheeses that, unlike a lot of the political ads out there, will be full of taste.

Le Chardonnay brings Paella night to Madison every Wednesday

le-chardonnay.jpg

Ok, so my favorite little restaurant in Madison has a new trick up it’s sleeve and I thought I should let you know about it!! Check out the little flyer below:

Spain without the Plane!

Every Wednesday night - Build-your-own Paella dinner
for just $19.95 at Le Chardonnay

¡Super Sabrosa!

Call it personalized Paella. Walk in to Le Chardonnay on Wednesday nights and say “Yessiree, I’ll have the build your own paella.” You’ll be handed a ticket on which you can select your favorite ingredients, from the seafood to the veggies, the rice to the spice.

Because you’re YOU, for cry-eye-eye. You’re not somebody else, with somebody else’s tastes. You want your paella made YOUR WAY.

Choose as many ingredients as you want from chicken, chorizo or rabbit; mussels, shrimp, calamari, octopus, conchs, escargots or clams; bell peppers, sweet peas, green beans or fava beans. Then select white or brown rice, spicy or not spicy. Wizard Chef Sami and his crew will freshly prepare this authentic Spanish specialty dish for you right on the spot.

Add up all those tasty ingredients and that’s as many combinations as there are cooks in Valencia! Any combination can be deliciosa. Try them all and see which you like best.

Or, if you don’t trust your own cooking, choose from the pre-selected Chef’s Special Paellas (including vegetarian) and let us do the choosing for you.

But wait a minute. Why should a French Tunisian restaurant be trading in Spanish specialties? Chef Sami is from the heart of the Mediterranean, where paella is popular everywhere you go. In his home Kerkennah Isles, they call it “pila,” but it’s the same rice and seafood combination. And when people said, “Sami, personalized paella is a pipe dream. It can’t be done,” he became obsessed, his eyes afire, and said “You watch, I will do it.”

Le Chardonnay’s Build-your-own Paella doesn’t have fussy rules. You don’t have to share it with someone else. You don’t have to wait any longer than usual. And you don’t have to pick around the ingredients you don’t like.

Best of all, it’s super sabrosa. So don’t delay, come on in and try it.

Every Weds. night is Paella Night, and additional spanish-themed specials may occasionally include tapas, flan and sangria, in addition to Barcelona beer and Spanish wines available all the time. On Weds. nights, limited regular menu will be available.

We look forward to seeing you soon for Paella Night. ¡Buen provecho!

To make your reservation either call 608-268-0372 or email it to lechardonnay@gmail.com for instant confirmation
